When the organism is exposed to the action of oxidizing agents, from outside or inside the organism, oxidative stress may be caused, with a consequent alteration in the balance between oxidant and antioxidant substances. Use of vitamin C, which carries out a natural antioxidant action, is important to avoid damages provoked by an excessive production of free radicals in the lungs (Deaton CM et al., Equine Vet J.Suppl. 2002). Besides having its own antioxidant function, vitamin C is able to regenerate or recycle other components of the antioxidant system, specially vitamin E. Administration of vitamin C to horses is influenced by the quantity and the available form.
